West Linn’s David Vasquez has been making a name for himself on the basketball court. He plays point guard against players three years older than him and recently earned recognition at a camp in San Diego.

West Linn's David Vasquez is ranked as one of the top forwards in the country for the class of 2017. The incoming sixth grader at Rosemont Ridge Middle School received that ranking at the recent Adidas Jr. Phenoms National Camp in San Diego.

However, it's interesting to note that Vasquez generally doesn't play with his fellow members of the class of 2017, nor is forward his natural position.

Vasquez lives to play point guard and he has had plenty of success at that position with the Run it Back Sports 8th grade team out of Beaverton.

Against players considerably older and stronger than he is, Vasquez more than holds his own, weaving his way through defenders with a knack for getting to the hoop and for setting up his teammates.

"That assist stat is always what's on his mind," David's father Dan said.

Vasquez is a quintessential gym rat, practicing for hours each day to improve his game.

When he was younger, Vasquez didn't have a hoop in his backyard so he focused on his dribbling and ball handling skills.

"He has friends who can shoot the ball really well and that kind of frustrates him but I keep telling him that it's more important to be able to get open," Dan Vasquez said.

He loves being able to get into the open court and is always looking for the open player.

Now Vasquez is concentrating on improving his shooting to round out his game even more.

Vasquez has also played for West Linn's 5th grade select team primarily as a forward as he is tall for his age.

But he has enjoyed playing up against older competition.

"I just have to work harder since I'm shorter than everyone," David said.

Playing at that level is not without its potential hazards however. Not long ago, Vasquez was battling for a rebound with a player a foot taller than him and was caught with an elbow, leaving him with a nasty cut on his head.

From the time he was in second grade, Vasquez made it a goal of his to get on the radar nationally for his basketball skills and accomplished that in San Diego where he was ranked 15th overall.

"It was fun getting noticed. That was something I wanted to do for a while," David said.

But he knows that he could likely be ranked higher when judged at point guard, his natural position.

Vasquez will continue playing with his club teams through middle school and is anticipating his first year at Rosemont which starts in a few weeks.

"I'm excited but I don't think I'll like the homework part," David said.

He may also go out for the track team this spring but, for now, he can still be found in the gym nearly every afternoon.

Rose City Showcase

Run It Back Sports will be participating in one of the premier tournaments in the country as they take on elite teams in the Rose City Showcase. The tournament starts Friday with the elite 17's tiping off the tournament at Lewis and Clark College.

The rest will start Saturday morning with games being played at the YMCA/Beaverton Hoop. There are many current NBA players that have come to Portland to play in the Rose City Showcase...players like Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic, Josh Smith of the Atlanta Hawks and Martell Webster of the Portland Trailblazers just to name a few.

Final Spring League Weekend

Run It Back Sports will be finishing their spring league this weekend at the Beaverton Hoop. They'll face a number of tough teams on their last weekend of league play before heading into tournament action.

As for the 15U's this will be a tough challenge as they try to remain undefeated for the whole spring league. The 16's have been playing very well the past few weeks and will see if they can maintain that consistency and finish on a winning note. The JV2 team has had it's ups and downs but really put it together last weekend with two big wins and will see if they can do it again for their last two games.

Although you can't tell by their records the younger guys have made huge improvements during the spring league. There will not be any tournament play for them so they'll be looking to finish the league on a high note.

Spring League Week 3

Great weekend by the Run It Back teams, with a combined record of 6-4 for week 3 of Spring League. Starting us off was the 16U team going 2-0 with an exciting last second win in their first game as Jamal Teano hit a last second three pointer to give RIB Sports the big win on the main court.

Next up is the 15U group which also went 2-0, with two impressive wins over All in One and Columbia Sno respectively. Making RIB's 15U team the only undefeated team on the JV level. Must be the coaching! ;-)

Spliting their two games were the 14U and 6th grade teams. That's right the 6th graders got their first win in their new uniforms defeating Putnam in the second game Sunday. There's the improvements taking place, way to go guys!

The 8th graders lost a tough first game losing by two in the last seconds and then were not able to bounce back for their second game losing it by seven.

Practice Wednesday at Ballys from 7-8:30pm.

Spring League Week 3

Week three for Run It Back Sports as all teams continue to build on their progress and look to improve their Spring League records. Leading the way is the JV1 team with a record of 4-0 as they face another undefeated team in All in One. The Varsity and JV2 teams both lost close games last week so they'll be looking to seal the deal this weekend when they face their opponents.

The 8th grade continues to make improvements under coach Mustopha Hoff as they look to build on their first win last week. The much improved 6th grade group will be looking for their first win in their new uniforms in week three of the Spring League.

Spring League Gets Underway

Run It Back Sports played their first games this past weekend with mixed results. With only one practice under their belts, the coaching staff is very excited about what they saw over the weekend.

Saturday's results: JV1 2-0, JV2 1-1 and Varsity going 1-1. Great job by the 15U team winning both games Saturday!

Sunday's results: 6th grade 0-2, 8th grade although they went 0-2, they showed the biggest improvement between games by playing better defense, rebounding missed shots and executing better on offense.

Everyone should be excited about getting back into the gym this week, now that we know what to expect during this spring league.

Congratulations to our 5th grade RIB team! They won this past weekends Oregon Prep Tournament in Beaverton/Hillsboro.

The 5th graders have shown huge improvements weekly and displayed those improvements over the weekend winning four games to claim the championship. Their unselfishness and execution on the offensive end and aggressive play with great rebounding on the defensive end proved too much for their opponents.

Again, congratulations to our 5th grade squad for bringing home their first trophy of the winter season!

West Coast Regional Tournament

RIB 8th graders prepare for a tough task this weekend when they battle top teams in the region at the West Coast Regional Holiday Tournament. The tournament will be played at the Beaverton Hoop and surrounding Portland schools.

RIB Sports will first face ICP Black at the Beaverton Hoop starting at 10:20am.

Consolation Champions

The 8th Black team comes back as Consolation Champions in their division for the second year in a row.

After a tough start to a very competitive weekend RIB Sports bounced back with a tough but well deserved win in their second game against Team Vision from Washington. I thought I was watching an NBA playoff game because of how physical the refs let the game get. But after a few technical's and bodies hitting the floor the kids showed a lot of heart and perseverance as they out lasted a worn down Team Vision.

Next up for RIB was an undersized Team Access also from the Seattle area. RIB made easy work of Access Warriors to go 2-0 on the day and set up a Consolation Championship game with the Bellevue Wolverines Monday afternoon. At first it looked as if RIB would be able to coast to victory as they ran the lead up to 16 points closing out the first half.

The second half was a totally different game as Bellevue showed they had a lot of fight in them closing the gap quickly and sending the game into overtime. After a few mistakes and missed freethrows by both teams RIB finally took control by making the last shot with the game tied with two seconds left in the game to win it!

Depends on who you ask. But I define "best move" as the one move you will use to get that game winning shot. For me, that's a step back jumper going left.

Best Advice I Was Ever Given:
"Don't ever let other's determine your actions" I like this one because it shows that we don't always need to respond negatively to someone that is being negative. We can be bigger than that.

Favorite Movie:
I love movies, so this is hard to say. I really like "Gridiron Gang", but maybe that's because I just watched it. I like "Déjà Vu", "The Dark Knight", "I Am Legend", and when I was growing up, I couldn't get enough "Indiana Jones".

Favorite Song:
This probably changes every season, or even everyday. I could probably pick one for every Genre. A new group, 'Mosaic' sounds similar to Boys II Men, but they have a show in Las Vegas right now, they are an a cappella group. During Christmas time, it's gotta be "The Jackson Five Christmas Album".

I also like two other groups that have been coming up with some pretty good stuff, "Casting Crowns", and "Nickelback". Other than that, you can always throw on some Stevie Wonder and you won't hear me complaining.

Memorable Scholastic Moment:
In college I had a Race/Class/Ethnicity class where we had to present memories of situations where we felt discriminated against, and then us students would recreate the scene, and everyone got a chance to be in the shoes of the person being discriminated against. It taught me to always consider how my actions are affecting other.

What I Always Hated About School:
I always hated cliques. I thought everyone could be friends with everyone. I didn't like how people always stuck with what they were comfortable with, what was normal. Everyone was afraid to be unique, or different. As a result, everyone dressed the same, talked the same, ate the same food, listened to the same music and hung out at the same spots. The people that weren't afraid to stand out, or be unique, are the ones doing amazing things now!

What I Always Hated About Practice:
I honestly can't say I hated a single thing about practice. I knew that whatever I did in practice translated to the game, and if I worked as hard as I could in practice, I was going to do really well in the game.

Hopes for This Season:
My only hope is to see constant improvement. If we can find weaknesses, and turn them into strengths, then we are putting in work.

West Coast Regional's rescheduled to Jan 3/4 due to bad Weather

The West Coast Regional’s have been have been moved to Jan 3/4 due to the snow storm that hit Portland this week. Teams traveling to Portland could not make it due to the bad weather so it has been rescheduled until the New Year.

Due to the weather last weeks Tigard elite tournament was cut short with our 7th grade team ready to win the championship and our 8th grade Blue playing strong in two last second shot win's. Hopefully the snow storm that is predicted for this weekend will pass us by and we can continue on our pursuit of perfection.

Last night's action was so unbelievable, it was going to be hard to top.

Thanks to this morning's snow and subsequent weather conditions, today's games have been cancelled. One day of great basketball - whether it was the dominant performance of the 7th Grade Team or the nail-biting-last-second-heart-pounding buzzer beaters supplied by the 8th Grade Team - was all this Oregon weekend could handle.

RIB 7th/8th grade Blue teams will be playing in the Tigard Elite Tournament Dec 13th/14th. This will be the 1st tournament of the year for 7th grade Blue team and they are ready to run.

Coach David Blue say's (These guy's are ready to go) we have been working hard in practice and if we keep our composure and stay focused we should do a good job this weekend.

Practice for all grade levels gets into full swing this week to get ready for our first Tournament The Tigard Elite Holiday Classic Dec 13th/14th.

Our 8th grade team won this tournament last year and our 7th grade team placed 2nd. This will be a good start for our kids because the schedule just gets tougher.

Though he may always be remembered for dunking on players twice his size, he's got his eyes set on the future of his community. "I don't think the Pacman Jones situation is sad at all. I do not think Pacman Jones should be in the NFL. If I was the commissioner, I'd kick him out. They keep giving him chances and he keeps messing up. Florida State safety Myron Rolle was awarded a Rhodes scholarship Saturday. He is the first major-college football player of his generation to win what is considered the world’s most prestigious postgraduate academic scholarship.

He became the most prominent student-athlete to win the award since Bill Bradley at Princeton in 1965. Bradley was later a Knicks star, a senator and a presidential candidate. Other winners have included Pat Haden (U.S.C. and the Rams) and Tom McMillen (Maryland and the N.B.A. and Congress).

Rolle’s quest to the win the Rhodes had received heavy attention from the news media because he chose to risk missing all or part of Florida State’s pivotal game at Maryland on Saturday night to have the interview, which took place in Birmingham, Ala.

Rolle received the news about 5 p.m.; he then received a police escort to a local airport, where a private plane waited to take him to the game. He entered the game late in the second quarter of a 37-3 victory. “He is flying high,” Sally Karioth, a Florida State nursing professor who accompanied Rolle to his interview, said before the game. “He was hopping. He’s usually real sedate.”
